Can we get married without an actual wedding ceremony?

Writer: Chris WinerChris Winer

Some couples ask if they can obtain a certificate of marriage without a ceremony, for example, for a visa application. Is this possible?

The short answer is no. There is no legal option to obtain a marriage certificate without a ceremony. For a marriage to be legal the following requirements must be met:

The Notice of Intent to Marry (NOIM) must be completed 1 month prior to the ceremony.

The Monitum must be read by your celebrant. This is a statement of the celebrant’s authority to solemnise your marriage and essentially defines marriage under Australian law.

You must each say the legal vows.

You must have two witnesses over the age of 18.

You must sign the 3 marriage certificates.

A marriage ceremony can be a simple event, if desired. I am more than happy to do a legals only ceremony, covering the basic requirements . It can also take place wherever you like- I can come to your house or you are welcome to come to mine and I can even provide witnesses. Contact me to discuss your requirements. I am here to help guide you through the process!
