How to include our Mums in our wedding?

Writer's picture: Chris WinerChris Winer

I would love some different ideas for how we can include our Mums in our wedding, in a non-traditional, but meaningful way. Thank you.

It is indeed a lovely idea to include family in your wedding day and will certainly make your Mums feel special and cherished. There are many ways to do this, and your celebrant will have lots of ideas to share, many of which are non-traditional.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Include your Mums in the planning process

  • Ask them to design or create wedding stationery or table dressings

  • Include their favourite flowers or colours in decorations

  • They could welcome guests on arrival

  • They could enter in procession before the wedding party

  • Mums can escort you both down the aisle, with or without Dad

  • Present them with roses or a gift of appreciation during the ceremony

  • They could perform part of the ceremony with the celebrant

  • They could give a reading or read a personal letter

  • Include them in a ritual such as hand fasting- there are many ritual possibilities

  • Wear some of Mum’s jewellery or something from her own wedding day

  • They could be the ring holders

  • They could be your legal witnesses

  • They could hold the bridal bouquet

  • They could make the Pronouncement together

At the Reception your Mums could:

  • Greet you on arrival with a welcome ritual- again, many possibilities on offer

  • Give a speech or tell the story of your life or how you met

  • Preside over the cake ritual

  • Join in the first dance

As you can see, there are myriad ways your precious Mums can be involved in your special day. I’m only too happy to help guide how to include them or any other family members in your ceremony. Let’s work together to create the perfect ceremony reflective of you and your story.
