Wondering if there are any other ways to describe each other in our wedding ceremony other than ‘life partner’, or ‘husband and wife?’ These terms just feel a little stuffy to us.

In the official paperwork and legal vows, the only terms you can use are husband, wife, or spouse. However, you can refer to each other in any way that you like in your personal vows.

There are many alternatives and some possibilities include:

  • Darling

  • Cherished

  • Dearest

  • Significant other

  • Beloved

  • Better half

  • Companion

  • Consort

  • Soul mate

  • Other half

  • Life companion

  • Sweetheart

  • Paramour

  • Flame

  • Treasure

  • Valentine

There are many choices and they need not be stuffy or conservative. You can even use your pet names for each other if you aren’t shy about sharing!
